University of Maryland Programs
Through the University of Maryland, there are several programs through which you can receive academic credit for your internship if you are a government and litics major.
In the Capitol Hill Internship Program and the Public Policy Internship Program, students paricipate in weekly seminars dicussing both their experiences and their organizations. You must apply to these programs and forms can be found outside of the advising office. The Government and Politics has very specific requirements for receiving credit for internship experience and they can be reviewed here. Also note that through these programs, you are responsible for finding your own placement.
However, there are other government related internship programs sponsored through the University of Maryland. The English Department sponsors an internship with the Maryland General Assembly in Annapolis. In this year-long program, students take a legislative writing class in the fall which fills the Junior English requirement; in the spring, students intern for twenty hours a week from January through mid-April for nine credits. The Center for American Politics and Citizenship at the University of Maryland offers the Maryland Internship Program for highly qualified students. In this semester long program, students earn a stipend and internship credit in a state-level agency for the state of Maryland; placement in an internship is guaranteed.
