Policy Internships
The term "policy" covered the vast majority of government related internships. However, the internships listed in this section here are generally linked to governmental agency. As a result, they're divided between domestic policy and foreign policy.
In the vast majority of government based internships (and jobs), you will have to apply through a relatively complicated online system. It is crucial that you follow the directions perfectly; frequently, the applications are complex and in depth as a primary method of weeding out applicants.
One of the primary aspects of government applications are the KSAs (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities). These are the unique qualifications the agency is looking for in a candidate. The questions related to the KSAs are tailored so the candidate will have to demonstrate very definite examples of these qualifications.
In responding to the KSAs, remember to be clear and concise. Verbiage will not improve your application; if anything, it will make it appear your are trying to compensate for a lack of experience. Additionally, keep in mind many applications are pre-screened for certain words before going to an individual. If a position description has very distinct requirements, be sure to use some of the specific terms in your answer.
Many people advocate the "STAR" system as an ideal way to organize one's response. The method is as follows:
Situation: While I was Acting...
Task: My task was to...
Action: The strategy that I adopted...
Result: The result was...
Keep in mind that application deadlines for these internships are frequently early, especially if you need security clearance.
